3 most common mistakes people make when planning a surprise proposal
(Plus one extra thing that can seriously ruin the moment)
I’ve photographed hundreds of surprise proposals. Trust me — I’ve seen everything. Here are the most common mistakes I see again and again.
1. Not respecting the meeting point
If your photographer gives you a specific meeting point, please respect it. When you change plans last minute or wander off, it becomes extremely difficult for us to find you — especially in busy locations. Yes, live location sharing helps, but it’s not always accurate. If we lose each other, the whole moment turns into chaos instead of magic.
2. Going down on one knee… for one second
Please don’t kneel down and jump back up immediately. Live it. Stay there for a moment. Breathe. Look at your partner. Feel it. We do shoot fast, but if the proposal lasts one second, it makes capturing that iconic moment incredibly difficult. Give it the time it deserves.

3. The backpack problem
This one happens more than you think. Many people wear a backpack and, at the moment of the proposal, place it right next to — or on — their legs. Guess what? That backpack will be in your photos. If it overlaps with your body, it’s very hard (sometimes impossible) to remove in Photoshop.
So please: put it somewhere discreet before the proposal.
And now the worst one…

The extra thing that can go wrong (and it breaks my heart every time): Strangers.
Some people see you from afar, sense “a moment,” and decide it’s the perfect time to walk over and ask: “Do you want me to take a photo?” Ugh! They interrupt the proposal. They break the intimacy. They ruin the surprise. I know they mean well — but please, if you’re reading this and ever see a proposal happening: don’t interrupt. Just let the moment unfold.
