Schönbrunn is the obvious choice — and for good reason. The sweeping baroque architecture, the manicured gardens, the golden light bouncing off limestone walls… it’s impossibly beautiful. But what makes it perfect for families is the space.

Kids can race down wide gravel paths, disappear into the famous Schönbrunn Maze, and discover little surprises around every corner — while I follow at a distance capturing all of it candidly. The Maze in particular is pure gold: genuine laughter, genuine chaos, genuine joy. Those are the shots you’ll actually hang on your wall.

Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon.

2. The Prater — Color, Energy & the Most Iconic Backdrop in Vienna

The Wiener Riesenrad — Vienna’s giant 19th-century Ferris Wheel — is one of those backdrops that makes every photo look like a movie still. The Prater amusement park surrounding it brings color, texture, and energy that you simply won’t find anywhere else in Vienna.

This location is ideal for lifestyle-style family photoshoots in Vienna — the kind where everyone is doing something rather than standing still. Ice cream in hand, kids pointing at the rides, parents stealing a quiet moment on a park bench. It’s relaxed, it’s fun, and the results look effortlessly vibrant.

3. Stadtpark — Golden Statues, Green Grass & Picnic Vibes

If Schönbrunn is grand and the Prater is lively, Stadtpark is intimate. This lush city park in the heart of Vienna is perfect for a relaxed, picnic-style session where the kids can spread out on the grass, chase pigeons, and generally just exist — which, as any parent knows, is when children look their absolute best on camera.

The gilded Johann Strauss statue provides a stunning focal point for portraits, and the park’s mature trees create gorgeous natural canopies of soft, dappled light. It’s a quieter, more editorial feel — and one of my personal favorites for family photoshoots in Vienna.

The Secret to Stress-Free Family Photos

After hundreds of sessions with families across Vienna, I’ve learned that the difference between a stressful shoot and a magical one comes down to three things.

Timing Is Everything

Golden Hour — the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset — is when Vienna transforms. The light goes warm and soft, the hard midday shadows disappear, and everything looks like it’s been dipped in honey. As a bonus: fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and kids who haven’t yet hit their afternoon energy wall. Early morning sessions at Schönbrunn especially feel like you have the whole palace to yourselves.

Snacks Are Not Optional

I always remind families to bring a treat. A favourite snack or small reward works wonders for keeping energy levels up and securing the cooperation of even the most camera-shy three-year-old. Some of my best shots have happened right after a well-timed biscuit break. Come prepared, and thank me later.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits can look sweet — but against Vienna’s palette of grey cobblestones, white stone facades, and soft green parks, coordinated works better. Think: a family colour story rather than a uniform. Dusty blues, warm terracottas, creamy whites, and sage greens all photograph beautifully and feel natural rather than costume-y. Avoid large logos or very busy patterns, which tend to distract from faces.

Meeting Point: We typically start at a central café or landmark that’s easy to find and low-pressure. A coffee for the parents, a juice for the kids, and five minutes to get comfortable before we even think about photos.

The Flow: Once we’re moving, it’s simple — we walk, we chat, the kids explore, and I capture the magic. There’s no posing countdown, no “stand here and smile.” I’ll occasionally suggest a direction or a moment, but mostly I’m working around you, not the other way around. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes, which is the sweet spot for keeping kids engaged without anyone losing the plot entirely.
